Our Story
Year by year
1875
Construction of the First Telegraph Station
Rewind to 1875 when the remarkable Telegraph Station was built in Bremer Bay. Designed by the talented Mr. George Temple Poole, this architectural gem marked a historic milestone for Western Australia. It was on January 1st when Governor Frederick Weld erected the first telegraph pole, connecting our region with the rest of the continent and the world. The line to Bremer Bay was completed by October, and on March 8th, 1876, the station officially opened for traffic. Miss Mary Wellstead, the first operator in Bremer Bay, possibly became the first female telegraphist in Australia, leaving her mark on our station’s history.
1896
Construction of the New Telegraph Station
A chapter of resilience unfolds in 1896 as the original Telegraph Station falls victim to fire. Rising from the ashes, a new station emerged, crafted from local stone and proudly positioned alongside its predecessor. The vibrant walls of the new structure swiftly became a recognised landmark, embracing the spirit of our community. In 2000, the remnants of the initial building made way for the revitalization and renewed purpose of the revamped station.
1930
Transfer of Ownership and Private Dwelling
The story takes a turn in 1930 when the Postmaster-General put the telegraph station up for tender. Enter Mr. William Sparks, a farmer from Needilup, who seized the opportunity and acquired the property for less than 50 pounds. From that moment, the station transformed into a unique private dwelling, providing a special home to its residents. In 1947, the late North Garnett recognised the value of the building and became its proud owner. In 1974, James Garnett, North Garnett’s son, inherited the beloved structure, continuing its legacy.
2019
a Big change
In 2019, Saffron Iffla and her mother, Jo, recognised the historic Old Telegraph Station’s immense potential and its captivating history. They seized the opportunity and purchased the building, envisioning a new chapter for this cherished landmark.
In 2019, their vision became a reality as The Telegraph Café opened its doors to the public.
2023
Significance and Current Use
